New Orleans Storyville Gambling Box, "Florence Leslie", "The Firm", ca. 1897-1915
Leather bound box from a gambling establishment/whore house in Storyville New Orleans, which was red light district that existed from 1897 to the First World War. Top of box has silver banners with one engraved "The Firm" and the second "Florence Leslie", the proprietor of the establishment. Between them there is a gilded brass Art Nouveau wreath circling a dancing girl. A lid on the top opens to expose a compartment that probably contained a dice cup. Presently has miscellaneous chips and dice, which I doubt relate to the box. The bottom opens to another compartment, which could held a deck of cards and there would be room for a pistol. Excellent condition. Dimensions are 6 1/4 x 6 1/4 with a height of 6 1/2 inches. Price$1800 (US) ConditionsCertified check or money order ships on receipt.
